BYU Football Tight Ends Coach Kevin Gilbride Talks Big12 Strategies and Key Players
Jun 27, 2024BYU football fans looking for a reason to be excited about their tight ends this season need look no further than their new coach, Kevin Gilbride. A recent interview on the Y's Guys show offered a glimpse into Gilbride's coaching philosophy, his impressive background, and his enthusiasm for his new role.
Gilbride boasts a Super Bowl ring from his stint as a quality control coach for the New York Giants in their 2011 championship run. The experience, working alongside his father, then-offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride Sr., was clearly special. "He was tough on me," says the younger Gilbride, "but that's exactly what I needed. It made me a much better coach."
While the Super Bowl victory is a highlight, Gilbride brings a wealth of experience to BYU. He emphasizes player development, "I want to develop our guys," he says. His philosophy centers on putting players in challenging situations, "They're going to get discouraged," he acknowledges, "but that's how they learn."
Looking at his current team, Gilbride is effusive about the talent at his disposal. "We have a very talented group of tight ends," he beams, "they can create matchup problems for other teams." Whether it's helping them hone their blocking or route-running skills, Gilbride is confident he can elevate their game.
The interview also provided some lighter touches. When asked about his favorite sports movie, Gilbride went with the classic "Field of Dreams". And for those curious about his pre-game fuel, the answer is a childhood favorite: Apple Jacks.
BYU fans can expect a fiery coach who prioritizes development and believes in the talent he has inherited. With Kevin Gilbride at the helm, the BYU tight end group is poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.
